Designing Mini Lamps: From CAD Concepts to Functional Prints
This mini-lamp project started as a creative design exercise and quickly turned into a practical fabrication challenge. I wanted to design compact lamps that are visually distinctive, easy to place on a desk or shelf, and genuinely useful in everyday spaces.
What made this build exciting was the balance between form and function. The designs had to feel expressive and playful, while still working as stable, usable objects.
Project Goal
The goal was to create mini lamps that:
- Have a strong design identity in a small footprint
- Are practical for ambient desk or bedside lighting
- Can be produced reliably with additive manufacturing
- Allow design variation without rebuilding the entire concept from scratch
I approached this as a prototyping workflow rather than a one-off print, focusing on geometry, printability, and visual character at the same time.
CAD Exploration and Iteration
I developed multiple CAD variants to explore different proportions, silhouettes, and structural details. Working through variants made it easier to test design direction before fabrication and helped preserve flexibility for future iterations.
Creative Vision and Practical Use
This project reflects the part of making I enjoy most: creating objects that are both expressive and useful. Mini lamps are a great example of that overlap. They can work as decor, but they are also everyday functional objects that shape how a space feels.
Designing these lamps gave me room to experiment creatively while still applying engineering constraints from fabrication and assembly. That mix of creativity and utility is exactly the direction I want to continue.
Why This Build Matters
For me, this project is not about printing a single object; it is about building a repeatable process for design-led fabrication:
- Start from intent (what should this object do?)
- Explore multiple CAD directions
- Prototype and fabricate
- Keep iteration open for future versions
That process is central to how I work as a maker-engineer and how I approach future product concepts.
Next Iterations
Future mini-lamp versions may include:
- Additional form variants and size options
- Material and finish variations
- Improved internal layout for cleaner assembly
- A documented build series with design notes and revisions
