Designing a Wireless Charging iPhone Dock for StandBy Mode

I wanted to build a functional desk object that I would use every day, not just a visual prototype. This project focuses on a wireless charging iPhone dock designed to support Apple’s Standby mode while keeping the setup compact, stable, and practical.

The result is a 3D printed dock that combines charging support, viewing angle optimization, and built-in storage in a single piece.

Final dock in use: wireless charging with Standby-friendly viewing angle and integrated storage

Project Goal

The main objective was to create a desk dock that:

  • Supports iPhone StandBy mode in landscape orientation
  • Integrates cleanly with a wireless charging setup
  • Includes practical storage for small desk essentials
  • Feels robust enough for daily use

Instead of designing around appearance first, I approached this as a functional prototyping challenge: geometry, fit, charging alignment, and usability had to work together.

Design and Prototyping Workflow

I started in CAD with dimension-driven constraints around phone size, charging zone alignment, and tilt angle. From there, I iterated through prototypes to refine three key factors:

  • Alignment: ensuring the phone sits correctly over the charging area
  • Stability: preventing wobble during docking/undocking
  • Usability: making the dock easy to use with one hand
CAD-to-fabrication workflow: concept model to fully functional printed dock

Why This Build Matters

For me, this project represents the kind of maker work I want to do more of: practical, engineered, and user-oriented. It demonstrates how additive manufacturing can move beyond simple prints into real functional products that solve everyday needs.

This build also reflects a broader workflow I use across projects:

  • Translate a real use case into design requirements
  • Prototype quickly and test in real context
  • Iterate until function and form are both reliable

Inspiration

This project was inspired by the Overwerk iPhone StandBy Dock. I used that concept as a design reference while developing my own CAD model, print workflow, and functional layout.

Next Iterations

Future versions may include:

  • Multi-device compatibility across iPhone sizes/cases
  • Cable routing refinements
  • Material and finish variants for different desk aesthetics
  • Parametric customization for user-specific storage configurations

This project is part of my broader design and fabrication portfolio, where I focus on additive manufacturing, functional prototyping, and electronics-integrated builds.
